Leland "Spoonful" Collins
Musician/Entertainer
With 2 ordinary tablespoons,
Leland Collins creates an awesome melody while his body rhythms
are a perfect compliment.
Leland "Spoonful" Collins
was born in Los Angeles, California and moved
to San Diego at the age of 13. He is the youngest
of 3 brothers. Leland's talent was inspired at an early age.
While watching [the
children's television program] Bozo The Clown,
a character was playing tablespoons in a barbershop setting.
He was pretending to cut the hair of a young boy and made the
clipping sound with the tablespoons. Leland was sparked and began
to ask questions about what he'd witnessed.
Leland's cousin, Donald
Howard, taught him to play tablespoons at age 11.
Leland's first pair of actual performing spoons came from his grandmother shortly
thereafter. Leland took his newfound talent seriously. He found
that wrapping his spoons in gauze for grip created an unmatched
sound. He also found there were virtually no limits on what
type of music he could play.
In 1989, Leland created "MIDI
Spoons" that can trigger synthesizers, computers and/or
other MIDI devices. This enables him to reproduce
the sound of virtually any instrument as well as play musical
notes and scales. This greatly advanced the spoons musical
horizons and gives Leland much more creative opportunities
than his inspirational Bozo The Clown character
could have ever imagined.
A few of Leland's other
musical influences: James Brown, Marvin Gaye and Stevie
Wonder.
Leland is always open
to fresh ideas...who knows what the future will hold? He would
definitely be a great spokesperson for a silverware company!
